Catherine and Didier Champalou started the Domaine in 1983. Their estate is renowned in the Vouvray appellation as one of the top producers of the Chenin Blanc grape. The family farm 21 hectares of vineyards that are situated on clay, limestone, and siliceous soils. Sustainable viviculture is practised along with elements of biodynamic philosophy. The lunar calendar is used as a guide during crop cultivation. The estate practices ‘Lutte raisonnee’ which literally means reasoned fight. Pesticides and chemical fertilisers are only used when absolutely necessary not as a mainstay. ‘Le Portail’ refers to a parcel of vines located adjacent to the Champalou’s winery.
This Chenin Blanc is a light gold in colour. The wines taste is characterised by citrus fruit and mineral notes. The Domaine Champalou Vouvray Sec ‘Le Portail’ enjoys a long fermentation and is aged on its unrefined lees for 18 months prior to bottling. This aging adds intensity and richness to the flavour and creates a long lasting finish. This is very much a gastronomical wine. Recommended servings are with seafood or a traditional cheese board.
