Tahbilk is one of Australia’s icon wineries, owned by the Purbrick family and situated in the little known central Victorian wine region of Nagambie Lakes. It has been a big year for the Purbricks, as they celebrate one hundred and fifty years of wine production at Tahbilk and it is wonderful to see that this, Victoria’s oldest family owned winery and vineyard (they have the oldest Shiraz vines in the world!), is still producing excellent wines at all price points.
This rare varietal was first planted at Tahbilk in the 1990s, with releases to date decidedly fruit-forward in style.
The 2015 Viognier is no exception to the rule! Aromas of ginger, rose petals and citrus blossom; the palate is softly textured with an apricot, stone-fruit intensity, honeysuckle notes and a long fragrant finish.
Don’t look for long-term cellaring here, we consider this Viognier best in its joyful expression of youthful exuberance.
The unique thing about Viognier is that, when it is made right, as this one is, it smells of the ripest peaches, apricots and honeysuckle – almost sweet and certainly rich, and then on the palate it is round and soft, yet savoury and textural, enjoy with a perfect free-range roast chicken, turkey and ham.
REVIEWS & AWARDS
“Ripe stone fruits with a dash of citrus are a seductive start to this little ripper. Lively flavours in the mouth with terrific acidity with crisp and moreish textures confirm this is a very smart wine. It’s ripe fruited yet very fresh and satisfying. Its Marsanne sibling is no slouch either.” – Tony Love – Adelaide Advertiser
