Pinot Gris, also known as Pinot Grigio in Italy, is thought to be a mutation of Pinot Noir. The name ‘gris’ derives from the French for grey, and refers to the traditionally greyish-blue hue of the fruit. Pinot Gris grapes are grown around the world but originally herald from the Burgundy region, spreading to Switzerland in the 14th century. Pinot Gris wines have grown in popularity in recent years, probably due to their light fruity taste, although they do vary greatly depending on region.
