Also known as Zinfandel, Primitivo is a red grape which is now extremely popular in Californian vineyards. Originally thought to be from Italy in the 18th century, it made its way to America a century later, where it gained the name Zinfandel. Primitivo generally produces quite a robust red wine but is also known for use in rose, especially in the US. The grapes have a naturally high sugar content which can lead to high levels of alcohol.
