Fontodi is famed for it’s heralded Chianti Classico, the same due care and attention is taken in producing this delicious Sauvignon Blanc.
Few properties in Tuscany are as immaculately tended, or produce such meticulously made wines, as Fontodi. The Manetti family has owned the estate since 1968 and Giovanni Manetti has run the property since 1980. A new cellar was installed for the 1998 vintage. Giovanni’s 80 hectares of vineyard, 90% of which are Sangiovese, are situated in the prime “conca d’oro” {golden shell} of Panzano, giving wines of supreme elegance, intensity and longevity. The south facing vineyards and their natural amphitheatre shape allow the grapes to ripen fully. Soils here allow for excellent drainage, encouraging the vines to put down deep roots. Giovanni has converted to organic viticulture over the past six years and is now following biodynamic principles in order to obtain the best quality fruit.
Although worldwide adulation understandably concentrates on their red wines the white is just as noteworthy and should not be missed.
TASTING NOTES
Meriggio is made solely from Sauvignon Blanc, the wine is unoaked and is light gold in colour, with a crisp, aromatic nose of grapefruit, white flowers and minerals. On the palate it is medium bodied with good acidity, length and a dry very intense finish which is simply superb!
