I made my annual pilgrimage to London’s swanky Landmark Hotel to enjoy Decanter Magazine’s flagship tasting event of the year. This year, I managed to secure a ticket to the Krug Champagne masterclass, so it is safe to say that I was looking forward to the day with unbridled schoolboy excitement!
All 8 of the Krug champagnes on show were of course superb, but then again I expected as much, owing to the prices they command. My favourites would have to be the 1995 followed by the 1996. However, the Champagne highlight of the day was to be found in the Grand Ballroom, where Charles Philipponnat was showcasing 6 of his wines.
The single vineyard Clos des Nort Goisses 2001 was quite simply stunning and without doubt the finest Champagne I have ever tasted, although it too does not come cheap! Wines such as this make the entrance fee worthwhile, and as consumer wine tasting events go, the fine wine Decanter bash each year is – in my opinion – the very best and something to look forward to each year.
Oz Clarke currently rates the Philipponnat NV Champagnes as some of the very best available – and at £29.95, they are well worth it!
