Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard, Morgon Cote Du Py 2018

Jean Foillard took over his father’s domaine in 1980; the biggest part of the vineyards are planted on the Côte du Py, the famed slope outside the town of Villié-Morgon and justifiably the pride of Morgon. The estate totals 11 hectares and the vineyards grow on slopes with crumbly schist soils that give the Gamay a unique expression.

All the wines are deep, structured, and complex, with a velvety lushness that makes them irresistible when young despite their ageing potential. Jean raises his wines in older barrels sourced from top estates in Burgundy, a logical decision for someone crafting Gamay in a Burgundian style. Would that all Burgundies were as consistent as Foillard’s Morgon! It is the passion and dedication of vignerons like this that have brought pride back to the crus of the Beaujolais.

TASTING NOTES
This is a fabulously pure, unfiltered and majestic example of Morgan at it’s very best. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and wonderfully complex, with great structure, a rock solid core, ripe tannins and outstanding grip and focus on the very long and pure finish.

This wine has a fine future ahead of it, but is equally beguiling now!

REVIEWS & AWARDS
“I’m finding myself reaching for descriptors such as elegant and expressive- words you you’d associate more with Chambolle-Musigny than Beaujolais. The soft texture is the best thing about this wine, and it makes you want to drink. It has no heaviness, it isn’t making an effort, it has nothing to prove. After a while longer, herb and tea elements begin to emerge. Then the bottle is empty, leaving me longing for more. It has teased my palate and left me wanting another glass. It is fantastically drinkable”. Jamie Goode {wine anorak}.
