Domaine Montirius has been owned by the Saurel family for 5 generations and has been farming organically/biodynamically since 1996. The Clos Montirius comes from low yielding vines (35 hl/ha) and spends 2 years in tank as opposed to oak; the aim being to produce an organic wine with finesse and suppleness and good fruit concentration.
Situated in the southern Rhône Valley, the 58 hectare domain with vine classifications in Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Côtes du Rhône has been converted to Bio-Dynamic culture since 1996.
Since then the team have expanded the range with a Cotes du Rhone & Vin de Pays du Vaucluse, all made from Biological and Biodynamic grapes.
The name of the wine comes from the fact that the vines are surrounded on all sides by forest and are totally enclosed.
A 50-50 blend of Syrah and Grenache dense ruby/purple colour, medium bodied with good concentration of sweet black fruit, hints of liquorice as well as leather.
Although unfettered by oak this wine has the power and concentration to age well for up to 10 years from vintage.
REVIEWS & AWARDS
“A dark, structured style, with black currant, charcoal, black liquorice and coffee notes followed by a muscular finish. There’s a nice minerality buried throughout. 91/100.” – Wine Spectator
