Winemaker Sandro Mosele has crafted a reputation for some of the finest representations of Australian Pinot and Chardonnay. The vineyard is split into five individual parcels with a variety of clones planted on some very different soils, and everything is done to enhance and express the natural characteristics of each parcel.
The Ferrous vineyard is named after the red, iron-rich sandstone pebbles that proliferate in the soil. Their high incidence places the vines under greater stress, so the resulting wine has firm tannins and very concentrated fruit, giving it has great potential to improve with age. 100% de-stemmed and fermented in open vats without inoculation. Matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new). Kooyong is a ‘domain’ in the true sense of the word and the wines are made from 100% estate grown fruit at its own on-site winery.
Concentrated aroma of black cherry fruit with savoury, spicy, mineral characteristics. Touch of dried cherries. Displays more and more complexity with aeration. Concentrated on the palate, with rich, velvety texture. Very complete – fine-grained tannin and juicy acidity. Great persistence. Anise on finish.
