Tannat is a French red wine grape which has recently achieved great success in Uruguay and many other South American countries. It is often used for blended wines, such as Armagnac and rose blends. The South American Tannat grapes tend to be lighter and lower in tannins than their European counterparts. Tannat is historically important as attempts in France to reduce the high tannin levels of the fruit led to the development of the modern winemaking process of micro-oxygenation, which is widely employed on a worldwide scale to improve the quality of wines.
