Chamonix

Cape Chamonix, Chardonnay Reserve 2018

Chamonix is a beautiful mountainside 300 ha estate in the uber trendy Franschoek valley of the Western Cape. A short drive from it’s better known neighbour Stellenbosch, the pulling power of Franschoek lies in its spectacular setting and the fact that it’s emerging as the culinary capital of the winelands, with a good spread of high-end eateries.

The vineyards are situated 450 metres above sea level which ensure cool nights and it’s this day night diurnal temperature difference that aids the slow ripening process to create fruit of the very highest quality.

Gottfried Mocke takes over in the cellar to create a Chardonnay which picks up awards year in year out, all his wines are highly sought after and most are now released in small quantities on an allocation only basis.

100% Chardonnay from 30 year old vines, fermented and matured for 14 months in French Allier oak, and a small proportion of new oak. Around 25% is made in concrete ‘eggs’ (the big new winemaking trend), natural fermentation used.

TASTING NOTES
Exquisite aroma with scents reminiscent of grapefruit and tropical fruit, ginger, spice and oatmeal. Well structured with a defined minerality, flavours of lime and toasted almonds on the palate, wonderfully expressive and top class. Drinking superbly well now having benefited from some bottle age.

REVIEWS & AWARDS
smoky, toasty nose of pleasing, buttered fruit. Pineapple, melon, cinnamon and a touch of liquorice on the palate. Very well made classic Chardonnay – Decanter 4 stars.
