Hogan, Mirror for the Sun Cabernet Franc 2019

Hogan Wines is a small, family-run business.  After seven years of working with various wineries in the Cape and overseas, Jocelyn Hogan Wilson now has the privilege of teaming up with her parents, Dunstan and Trish Hogan.

WINEMAKING

The Cabernet Franc grapes are sourced from 9-year-old, trellised vines from the lower Helderberg on granitic soils. The vineyard is 2km from the coast. The maritime effect is most favourable, especially in the hot February-March months in Stellenbosch. Leaf removal in the bunch zone (during November/December) is an important practice in this vineyard to let enough sun in to prevent vegetal flavours.
The grapes were picked towards the end of February. After picking they went straight to a cold room overnight to 10 degrees celsius. The following day they were sorted and crushed (no whole bunch). Spontaneous fermentation took place in open-top
fermenters with very soft handling during fermentation, only two punch downs per day.

TASTING NOTES

Some of the fruit from this cooler climate vineyard on the False Bay side of the Helderberg is sold to Delaire Graff to make rosé, but Jocelyn Hogan bagged enough to make two barrels of red wine under her own label. Suitably fresh, aromatic and elegant, it has floral, cut-grass and graphite notes and crunchy black cherry fruit.
