Category: 12.5% ABV, Fer Servadou, France, Lutte Raisonnee, Marcillac,
Deliciously fruity red wine from Marcillac, first used to quench the thirst of pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Santiago di Compostella, and then miners from nearby coalfields. Made from the local Fer Servadou grape from a vineyard that was saved from extinction by a handful of dedicated growers.
‘The endorsement I will give this wine is that I love it. Each vintage I have tried has had the same personality. It’s the personality of a particular grape variety grown in particular soils. It’s bloody, ferrous, meaty and fresh, with minerality and bright fruit. It’s drinkable. It’s food friendly. And I like to drink it. Best of all, it’s affordable. – Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak
TASTING NOTES
A dark purple-red in colour. On the nose scents of brambly red fruits with balsamic notes. The palate is mineral in texture (‘Fer’ translates into ‘iron’, after all) with further spicy red fruits flavours leading to a fresh and clean finish.
REVIEWS & AWARDS
“If I had to survive on one single wine for the rest of time it would probably be this. Red, sappy, refreshing, reminiscent of elderberries and tinged with iron. It’s made in the south-west of France from the Fer Servadou grape and it is just what I’d hope to have in my carafe to wash down steak-frites in an old-school bistro. It was introduced to me by a friend whose family has an old farmhouse in the Aveyron. Over years of summer holidays they have experimented extensively to see which producer’s Marcillac they like the best and I am happy to say that I have joined in. For the past few years Domaine du Cros lo Sang del Pais has been the winner. The reason is the taste. The beautifully designed label is a coincidence.” – Victoria Moore –
